how to choose a day care center for 14 month baby?
I finally got my work authorization for United States! but now the problem is that I need to find where to leave my son while im working. My husband has his own bussines and he is usually at home during the week but he is busy working on stuff.
Im 23 and this will be my first real job and also the first time I have to leave my son in someone elses care. My parents cant babysit since they dont live in the US and my mother in law works during the week.
help!

I had a VERY hard time finding one I liked when my son was this age. Some of the things you need to consider and ask about is if he walks and if he naps in a crib. My son DIDN’T walk at this age so I was eventually forced to use a center who put him in a room with children who only crawled (they were ALL months younger than he was. I thought having a small center would mean he would get more attention, but I found this to NOT be true in our case. There were up to six kids in his class and ALWAYS only one teacher. We moved and I took him to another big facility that has worked much better. His is in a room with from 8 to up to 17 other kids and there are 2-3 teachers in the room. He gets more attention and is VERY happy there. He had an adjustment period for about two weeks, but we put him in a week earlier than we needed to and didn’t leave him there all day for the first week.
Another thing that was difficult for us was that most centers in my area put a child who doesn’t walk in a crib at nap time. My son has never slept in a crib and I thought it would be too traumatic to do that to him.
Other things to look for: cleanliness (no nasty smells), sanitary changing areas, plenty of toys, a “secure” front door, video cameras in the rooms for montioring and varied, well-balanced meals. Ask if they will feed your son if he seems timid about eating there at first. Some centers will try to feed them the cheapest food they can, avoid those centers. If all the kids are always crying, I think that is a sign. There will always be kids who are just unhappy (they’d be crying no matter where they were), but if they ALL seem unhappy or fearful, croos that center off your list. Try to visit more than once before you decide. Ask the teachers how long they have worked there and how much experience they have. A revolving door of teachers would be difficult for your son.
